PPP lawmakers submit resolution calling for halt to military academy integration

On August 7, lawmakers from the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) presented a resolution to the Lee Jae Myung administration, requesting them to cease efforts to integrate the nation's military academies into a single entity. The resolution, co-signed by 32 PPP lawmakers and two additional lawmakers, urged Lee to retract his statements implying that graduates from the Korea Military Academy were responsible for all of South Korea's past military coups.

Furthermore, the government's plan to establish an integrated military academy by merging the academies of the Army, Navy, and Air Force was deemed "politically motivated" by the resolution. The resolution was endorsed by independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon, a former PPP leader, and Rep. Chun Ha-ram, the floor leader of the Reform Party.

During a defense ministry policy briefing on Wednesday, Lee expressed concerns over the potential for another coup by Army elites, advocating for the rapid integration of military academies.
