Pacific artist Olivia Foa’i's emotional journey back to her ancestral home in Tokelau

In June 2025, Olivia Foa'i embarked on a 24-hour journey from Samoa to Fakaofo in Tokelau on the MV Mataliki, her first visit to her grandfather's homeland since childhood. Despite her deep connection to the island through family and Te Vaka, the band founded by her father, Foa'i had spent much of her life living elsewhere. The voyage across the Pacific ocean evoked memories of Te Vaka's artwork and designs, with birds in flight displaying wings similar to those featured on the band's logo.

Upon arrival, Foa'i realized that her Gagana Tokelau, or Tokelauan language, was limited, and she was unsure how she would integrate into a culture she had mostly experienced through media and family stories. However, she was met with acceptance and warmth by her extended family, who were eager to welcome her with open arms.

As she returned to Fakaofo as an adult, Foa'i observed that the island was smaller than she remembered, yet the time spent reconnecting with her elders held immense value. The elders' patience in helping her navigate her Gagana Tokelau and offering guidance was a cherished experience. Additionally, a picnic trip to the islet of Fenualoa allowed her to observe traditional Tokelauan practices, such as weaving coconut leaf baskets and gathering coconut crabs, offering a glimpse of what life might have been like before modern conveniences.

Foa'i's visit to Tokelau has solidified her connection to her ancestral homeland and brought her life into a full circle, aligning with her ongoing work on a documentary about Te Vaka. The journey has allowed her to appreciate the dedication and vision of her father, Opetaia, who played a significant role in bringing Pacific music to global audiences.
