Opinion: Fauci doesn’t have the answers on Covid’s origins. China does

The recent Senate committee hearings on the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic revealed a clear pattern of political distraction and obstruction from addressing the critical public health issue. Adding fuel to the fire, Anthony Fauci faced contempt of Congress charges for invoking his Fifth Amendment rights amidst a committee led by an individual who had previously called for Fauci's imprisonment.

The virus that caused the pandemic is indisputably believed to have originated in Wuhan, China. From the very beginning, the Chinese government actively suppressed information about the epidemic, dragging its heels in alerting the global community to the looming threat. They obstructed the World Health Organization's (WHO) efforts to gather essential facts about the virus's transmissibility, denying the world precious weeks to prepare for the impending crisis.

As the virus made its way from China to Europe and subsequently North America, the Chinese authorities went to great lengths to cover up the initial facts surrounding the epidemic. They silenced whistleblowers and refused international investigations, placing restrictions on WHO representatives within their hotel rooms under the pretext of assuming the virus had been imported from abroad.

Furthermore, they barred international scientists from accessing Wuhan's laboratories and the records kept by local public health authorities. Countries advocating for an open investigation found themselves on the receiving end of economic retaliation, all while China steadfastly maintained that the virus's origins were foreign.
