NSFAS opens theft case against former board member

The National Student Fund Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has launched a theft investigation against a former board member accused of stealing laptops intended for impoverished schools. The former board member allegedly retained 10 out of 30 laptops allocated to six high schools during a March donation drive in the Eastern Cape. Each school was supposed to receive five laptops for collective use.

NSFAS administrator professor Hlengani Mathebula expressed shock at the board member's actions, stating that the organization expects leaders and employees to uphold high standards. Mathebula emphasized that the incident highlights the organization's commitment to ensuring integrity and addressing any shortcomings in the donation process.

Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training chairperson Tebogo Letsie expressed serious concerns over the allegations, stating that if proven, the conduct would be a severe breach of public trust. He called for a written report detailing the circumstances surrounding the laptop donation, the distribution controls, and the steps taken to recover or replace the devices.

Letsie emphasized the importance of employees reporting suspected wrongdoing without fear and ensuring a fair and prompt investigation.
