Greater Accra Minister gives developers, occupants at Kpeshie Lagoon 21 days to vacate

Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo has issued a 21-day deadline for developers and occupants in the Kpeshie Lagoon buffer zone near Laboma Beach to vacate their structures. This ultimatum was announced during a site inspection aimed at reclaiming waterways and mitigating recurring flooding. The minister emphasized that the buffer zone's restoration is crucial for enhancing drainage and reducing flood risks in surrounding communities.

Ocloo explained that the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to reclaim waterways and address perennial flooding, noting that a similar demolition took place earlier. However, authorities granted residents an additional 21 days after realizing they had not received adequate notice. She warned that all structures within the designated buffer must be removed before the deadline, with options for residents to demolish the buildings themselves or have REGSEC (Regional Security Force) handle the task.

The minister linked recent floods, including one in Tse Addo, to the encroachment on waterways. She stressed the importance of preserving the buffer zone to ensure that water flows into the sea gradually after heavy rains. Authorities are currently evaluating all structures within the Kpeshie Lagoon buffer zone to prepare for the planned demolition once the 21-day notice expires, as part of the government's response to flooding issues, particularly in light of casualties reported on June 29, 2026.
