Demolition: Some Laboma businesses given 21 days to vacate Kpeshie Lagoon buffer zone

The Greater Accra Regional Security Council has given businesses and residents in Laboma Beach's Kpeshie Lagoon buffer zone a 21-day ultimatum to leave the area. This order targets structures, such as the Pink Flamingo lounge, that have been built within the lagoon's protected zone. REGSEC points to flooding and unauthorized development in the buffer zone as reasons for the imminent demolition, aimed at improving waterway management and flood resilience in the Greater Accra Region.

During a tour of the area, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, emphasized that continued encroachment on waterways and wetlands threatens the region's flood management and drainage infrastructure efforts. She warned that non-compliant occupants will face forced removal to clear the way for buffer zone restoration. Ocloo also noted that some developers have been previously instructed to halt constructions but continued despite warnings.

She mentioned that some encroachers lack proper permits, highlighting the persistent issue of unauthorized development. The demolition is part of broader efforts by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council and other state agencies to reclaim waterways, remove unauthorized structures, and enhance flood resilience in vulnerable communities.
