Dwayne Johnson, known as "The Rock," commented on the negative reviews and poor box office performance of Disney's live-action Moana remake. Johnson, who reprises his role as Maui in the film, acknowledged the criticism Moana received, but remained positive. "Our first two reviews came out... They were amazing," he told People. However, he admitted the situation often changes, and reviews can go the other way.

The movie currently holds 31% favorability ratings from critics and 88% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. IGN awarded the film a 6/10. Johnson emphasized that the challenge lies beyond the opening weekend, urging fans to remember the impact the movie will have. He expressed that the culture, particularly Polynesian culture, stood up and appreciated the representation on the big screen.

Johnson's wife, Lauren Hashian, agreed, emphasizing how the movie resonated across cultures, even for those not Polynesian. Despite the positive online response, Moana failed to impress at the box office, opening with just $95 million globally and accumulating $261 million in total since its fourth week in theaters. Despite the underwhelming box office performance, Disney remains committed to its remake strategy, as a Tangled sequel is in production.
