AMABHUNGANE: Inside the SAPS investigation into former Prasa security chief Alexio Papadopulo

Former Prasa security chief Alexio Papadopulo is embroiled in a police investigation following his challenge to searches conducted on his residence and Prasa office in May 2026. The court bid, filed on 20 July, revealed details of the Commercial Crime Unit investigation into Papadopulo's alleged connections with reputed crime boss Ralph Stanfield.

The preliminary hearing was postponed for the full challenge to be heard on 2 November. Papadopulo denies any wrongdoing and places himself within a larger organized crime and corruption investigation involving Malusi Booi, Ralph Stanfield, and Nicole Johnson. Booi, a former City of Cape Town mayoral committee member, and Johnson are seen as central figures in the investigation.

The SAPS affidavit used to obtain warrants allegedly connected Papadopulo to Stanfield and Johnson, revealing his role as an intermediary in the procurement of Prasa contracts worth R60 million. The investigation also uncovered evidence of a meeting between Papadopulo and Stanfield, as well as a witness stating that Papadopulo introduced Johnson as the "social facilitator" for security on the central railway lines in Cape Town.

Papadopulo argues that the warrant is unlawful and overbroad, contending that it captures his lawful duties in the rehabilitation of the Central Line and the relocation of communities. SAPS maintains that the search warrants were justified and precisely worded. The investigation, fueled by red flags, is set to continue in November, with both sides presenting their evidence for the Johannesburg and Pretoria warrants.
