PTI remains wary as govt renews talks offer

ISLAMABAD witnessed a renewed dialogue between the main opposition party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and the government. However, any potential talks are contingent upon specific conditions set by PTI. Chief Whip Aamir Dogar met National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry on Thursday.

PTI’s Chief Whip disclosed that the government had once again extended an invitation for talks within the Parliament House, stating that the ball was now in PTI’s court. Federal Minister Dr Fazal reassured the media that the government was hopeful for a positive response from PTI.

PTI’s Central Information Secretary, Sheikh Waqas Akram, confirmed the meeting but expressed skepticism about the situation’s simplicity. He highlighted that the National Assembly session was initially scheduled to commence on August 7 but was delayed until August 17 by the government. This delay allegedly aimed to avoid tensions and allegations between the PML-N and PPP.

Mr Akram mentioned that Aamir Dogar inquired about the delay, and the National Assembly Secretariat informed him of the speaker’s desire to meet him. During the meeting, the speaker invited Dr Fazal and mentioned that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had previously offered dialogue, but PTI had not responded.

PTI emphasized that negotiations could not occur without a conducive environment, including improved meeting facilities and access to medical care for PTI’s founding chairman, Imran Khan. They demanded permission for meetings with Imran Khan and access to his personal doctors. While the speaker suggested joining parliamentary standing committees, PTI stated that any decision on the matter would be made by Imran Khan.
