5 observations of UND football fall camp Day 8

August 6—The UND football team engaged in full-contact drills and welcomed local officials to participate in their eighth day of fall camp. Here are five observations from the practice session. Despite the offense outperforming the defense in recent days, UND's first-year defensive tackles Mason and Isaac Beaver have proven adept at penetrating the backfield.

During live hitting exercises, Mason successfully tackled running back Griffin Broderick, while Isaac maintained a five-play backfield presence, potentially resulting in a sack on quarterback Jack Sulik. The UND offense has earmarked Logyn Eckheart and Albany transfer Kylyn Macklin for the starting tackle positions, but the Beaver twins, Eastern Illinois transfer Kefa Pereira (6-1, 305), and Tyler Henry have been pushing for playing time.

Quarterbacks Jerry Kaminski and Javance Tupou'ata-Johnson excelled in red-zone scenarios, with Kaminski scoring a touchdown up the sideline and Tupou'ata-Johnson connecting with Jimmie Maxson III for a 20-yard catch. The offense demonstrated its prowess in a scripted live setting, with Tupou'ata-Johnson contributing three touchdowns in a rapid sequence, and Colton Brunell contributing a significant play for a score.

Defense standout Ben Kamara recorded a notable play by deflecting a deep pass intended for Caleb Goodloe, while Matt Lawson, filling in at running back for the offense near the goal line, managed to score after a missed run. The day concluded with a Kaminski interception, adding to the team's defensive achievements. The kicking unit's performance during live practice was less impressive, as Kenten Laughman, Sawyer Riffle, and Easton Choate combined for a 0-for-5 start, including a blocked attempt by edge Braden Mohr.

Despite this, Riffle and Laughman managed to connect on shorter kicks later in practice. The inconsistency in the kick game was a source of discouragement for the team, which is seeking reliability in all facets of the game. Wide receiver Vuciri Hakim, known primarily for his contributions on special teams, displayed notable progress on offense, intercepting a deep pass thrown by freshman quarterback Brooks Hendrickson and making a spectacular catch on a back shoulder throw late in practice.

Mason McFarland, a first-year nickel player from Sacramento City College, contributed significantly during live situations, stopping Broderick in the backfield and forcing an incompletion from Sulik. McFarland's versatility and potential have generated interest, as he competes for playing time alongside Jonnie Wiltshire, whose eligibility case is still pending.
