Chargers training camp: Pair of safeties stand out on Day 8

During Day 8 of the Chargers' training camp, two safeties emerged as standout performers - rookie safety Genesis Smith and veteran safety Elijah Molden. Smith's impressive skills were on full display when he intercepted a pass thrown by Justin Herbert, which had initially been tipped by Donte Jackson. Chargers defensive coordinator Chris O'Leary praised Smith's ball skills, QB anticipation, and execution in practice, stating that his performance will be a crucial factor in determining his role in the defense.

Smith was drafted by the Chargers in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, the 131st overall pick.

Molden, on the other hand, will enter his third season with the Chargers after spending his first three years with the Titans. He played in 12 games last year, recording 52 tackles and one interception, and received a defensive grade of 55.3 from PFF, placing him 80th among 98 qualified safeties. O'Leary expressed his satisfaction with the defensive unit's performance during practice, emphasizing that the experience of facing an elite offensive unit will help solidify Molden's position within the defense.
