Wa Municipal Health Directorate calls for local partnerships to fix funding gaps in healthcare delivery

The Wa Municipal Health Directorate is urging local collaborations to tackle financial constraints in healthcare services, stating that government funding alone is insufficient to address the issues plaguing health facilities in the area. At a 2026 Half-Year Performance Review Conference, Dr Alex Bapulah, the Municipal Director of Health Services, emphasized that the growing demand for quality healthcare far exceeds the available resources.

Speaking at the event, Emmanuel Ormuorh, the Municipal Disease Control Officer, pointed out that achieving Universal Health Coverage necessitates more than just the efforts of the Ghana Health Service. He highlighted that healthcare is a joint responsibility, requiring partnerships with Municipal Assemblies, traditional authorities, development partners, corporate organizations, faith-based organizations, educational institutions, community leaders, and the general public.

Despite ongoing collaborations, Ormuorh acknowledged persistent challenges faced by many health facilities, including inadequate infrastructure, limited logistics, transportation issues, staff accommodation problems, and escalating operational costs. These obstacles cannot be resolved through the Integrated Financial Guarantee (IGF) funding alone.

During the conference, the focus was on mobilizing local resources to facilitate healthcare improvements. Ormuorh urged health managers to be transparent and accountable to attract partners' support. He advised health facility and program managers to devise innovative stakeholder engagement plans to identify prospective collaborators.

The presentations and discussions at the conference should be open, honest, evidence-based, and solution-oriented, addressing existing gaps and learning from successes. Ormuorh also took the opportunity to commend health workers for their dedication, professionalism, and resilience amidst numerous challenges. The conference recognized and honored staff members for their outstanding patient care, those transferred, and retirees who served the Ghana Health Service and the Wa Municipal Health Directorate for over three decades.
