US Senator Fetterman struggles to defend support for Israel as progressives win big

In a contentious interview with television host Jon Stewart, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman found himself struggling to defend his unwavering support for Israel amid rising criticism from progressive Democrats who advocate for Palestinian rights. The staunchly pro-Israel Senator bluntly stated that he would rather lose support within his own party than compromise his position on Israel's security.

The comments come at a time when progressive Democrats who are vocal on Palestinian issues are gaining considerable election victories across the country. Michigan saw a progressive candidate, Abdul El-Sayed, narrowly beat a pro-Israel contender backed by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, moving the state closer to its first Muslim senator in history.

Fetterman's staunch stance even drew criticism from Rahm Emanuel, a former Obama advisor whose father was involved in the 1948 Irgun militia that looted Palestinian homes and killed their residents. Emanuel acknowledged the Democrats need to move away from unconditional support for Israel, stating, "I'm aware of it. But these were all very specific choices."

Fetterman defended his position, emphasizing that he would rather be known for his beliefs than soften his stance towards Israel. He argued that his support for Israel, particularly in light of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks, has put him at odds with many within the party. The Senator further asserted that Israel's actions, including the siege of Gaza, are for their self-defense against threats from Hamas and Iran.

Progressive critics, however, argue that Israel's actions have resulted in significant civilian casualties, with some estimates claiming over 22,000 Palestinian children have been killed. Fetterman acknowledged the gravity of the situation and criticized Hamas for allegedly stealing aid meant for Gaza.

The interview took a peculiar turn when Fetterman was asked about the term "Zionist" being used as a slur in the Democratic Party. He admitted to being hounded by protesters calling him a "Zio" and questioned why university students were not protesting against Iran's brutal suppression of protesters earlier in the year. However, the Senator's arguments were met with skepticism and confusion from Stewart.
