Ukrainian ambassador: Worst phase of crisis in relations with Poland over, but tensions remain

Ukrainian Ambassador Mykhailo Bodnar has stated that the most challenging phase of the crisis in Ukraine's relations with Poland has concluded, although tensions persist. In an interview with European Pravda, Bodnar explained that historical, political, and social factors have been driving the recent strain in relations between the two countries.

The significant Ukrainian population residing in Poland has contributed to social tensions, despite their positive impact on both the Polish economy and society. Bodnar highlighted the upcoming parliamentary elections, noting that some politicians are exploiting issues related to Ukraine and Ukrainians to gain political advantage. Furthermore, unresolved historical discrepancies continue to complicate diplomatic discussions.

While Bodnar acknowledged that the crisis has reached its peak, the tensions are still affecting ordinary citizens. However, he commended the Polish authorities' swift and effective response to attacks against Ukrainians, both physical and verbal. In incidents of verbal abuse, perpetrators may face job loss or other consequences. The Ukrainian prosecutor's office has also established a dedicated unit to investigate crimes motivated by national hatred, ensuring that discrimination based on nationality is not overlooked.

Bodnar expressed concern over the deteriorating public mood in Poland, but dismissed claims that the majority of Polish society harbors negative views towards Ukrainians or regards Ukraine negatively. He emphasized that there are no indications of mass actions targeting Ukrainians and that reducing tensions requires increased engagement from Ukrainian public figures and opinion leaders through visits to Poland and dialogue with politicians and experts.
