Nearly half of Africans consider emigrating as jobs, poverty drive migration — Afrobarometer

Nearly half of Africans have contemplated emigrating in search of better opportunities, driven by unemployment and poverty issues, according to the Afrobarometer African Insights 2026 report titled "Beyond Borders: Citizen Perspectives on a Shifting Global Order." This represents a 40% increase in migration aspirations compared to surveys conducted between 2016 and 2018.

Economic pressures, such as the search for employment and escaping poverty, are the primary motivations for migration, with 50% of potential migrants citing these reasons. The desire to move is strongest among young people and those with higher education levels, reflecting concerns over limited employment opportunities despite educational advancements.

While there is support for regional integration and free movement, with 56% of respondents backing freer cross-border movement, practical challenges persist, as 63% of respondents believe crossing borders is difficult due to administrative, legal, and logistical barriers. Public attitudes toward immigration are mixed, with 77% welcoming foreigners socially but divided on economic impacts.

Approximately 64% prefer fewer job seekers and refugees, while 70% would prefer fewer immigrants. The report suggests that Africa’s migration ambitions reflect persistent concerns about youth unemployment and limited economic opportunities, underscoring the need for job creation, economic growth, and regional cooperation to retain skilled young people and harness their potential for sustainable development.
