UK reports record numbers referred to anti-radicalisation scheme

The UK's anti-radicalisation Prevent programme handled a record 10,293 referrals in the year ending September 2025, marking a significant increase since reporting began in 2015, the Home Office declared. Extreme right-wing concerns dominated, accounting for 20 per cent of all referrals and 2,103 incidents, a 42 per cent jump from the previous year.

The hard-right, anti-immigrant party Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, experienced recent electoral success, as did far-right, anti-Muslim campaigners like Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, or Tommy Robinson. Teachers, medics, and others can alert authorities about potential radicalisation risks, leading to screenings and possible safeguarding interventions, although consent from the individual is required.

Children aged 11 to 15 comprised the largest referral group, making up 35 per cent of extreme right-wing ideology referrals. Concerns over Islamist extremism dropped slightly, with 860 referrals, or 8 per cent, down 9 per cent from the prior year. However, the number of cases that advanced to the safeguarding stage rose despite this decline, emphasizing that Islamist terrorism remains the primary terrorist threat in the UK.
