U.S. pressure on Europe to transfer Patriot stocks to Ukraine failed – WP

The Trump administration urged several European nations to donate their Patriot missile systems to Ukraine earlier this year, but some governments hesitated due to fears that giving up the systems would weaken their own defenses, according to The Washington Post. Ukraine relies heavily on the Patriot air defense systems as its sole means of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles, and the supply of interceptor missiles has been dwindling due to their heavy usage during the U.S. war with Iran.

NATO officials stated that the production of U.S.-made batteries and other air defenses is falling behind the rapid pace of global conflict.

A senior Ukrainian official, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed deep concern over the situation, saying, "The situation is really bad" and foreseeing a "worst scenario" by this winter because of the shortage of interceptor missiles. The official emphasized that the number of missiles found in the near future will not be sufficient, as Russia possesses a significantly larger arsenal of ballistic missiles.

On August 5, Russian forces launched an attack on Ukraine, deploying four Zircon/Oniks anti-ship missiles and 24 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles. The air defenses in Ukraine were unable to intercept any of these missiles, resulting in a tragic outcome with 17 people killed and 44 others wounded. The majority of the attacks targeted critical infrastructure, including railway stations, civilian warehouses, and a major Epicentr production and logistics hub, which was destroyed by a Russian airstrike.

President Volodymy Zelenskyy called on partners who are not prepared to expedite interceptor deliveries to instead impose new sanctions, as many Russian plants that manufacture ballistic missiles continue to operate freely. He urged the G7 and the EU, as well as all those committed to protecting human life, to take additional steps to support Ukraine.
