Trump signs executive order on polysilicon industry

U.S. President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on Thursday to safeguard American production of polysilicon, a vital component for semiconductors, in an effort to shield the U.S. industry from foreign interference. The executive order, which is part of a series of trade and tariff actions under Section 232, aims to bolster domestic polysilicon manufacturing and deter "malign foreign actors" from exploiting the supply chain.

White House Staff Secretary William Scharf emphasized that the order supports onshoring manufacturing capacity and protecting American industry from overseas dumping and foreign threats. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick highlighted that polysilicon is a crucial material used in the production of silicon wafers for AI chips, stating that the move will bring the supply chain back to the U.S. and prevent Chinese manufacturers from dumping products at below-market prices.
