TikTok Explains Delay in Removing Perez Hilton’s Self-Harm Livestream

TikTok clarified on Tuesday evening the reason behind the delay in removing Perez Hilton's self-harm livestream, attributing it to a "moderator error." The video platform's spokesperson informed multiple media outlets that Hilton's livestream, where he appeared to repeatedly cut himself, was flagged to TikTok's automated moderation systems within minutes of its start.

Although the livestream was forwarded to the U.S. moderation team for review, the spokesperson disclosed that a "moderator error" caused a delay in its removal and the suspension of Hilton's account. When questioned further, a TikTok spokesperson reiterated the "moderator error" explanation but did not provide additional details.

The spokesperson did, however, mention that the company "proactively" reached out to law enforcement following the flagged livestream. TikTok clarified to outlets that the livestream was up for only half that time. Furthermore, the spokesperson stated that Hilton's subsequent TikTok lives were cut off within a minute and a half.

Hilton's livestream violated TikTok's user guidelines, which prohibit showing, promoting, or sharing plans for suicide or self-harm. Local law enforcement responded to Hilton at his Miami-area home following the incident, having received multiple calls about an individual livestreaming acts of self-harm. The Sheriff's Office confirmed that Hilton was alone inside his residence and had been safely recovered and transported to a local hospital for medical attention.

Hilton's team and family addressed the situation on his gossip site, expressing that he was receiving medical care and requesting respect for his privacy and that of his family.
