Three killed in southern Lebanon as violence flares

Three individuals lost their lives in southern Lebanon as tensions escalated, according to a Lebanese presidential source. The seventh round of peace talks between Israel and Lebanon took place in Rome under US leadership, aiming to resolve the longstanding conflict. However, the Lebanese source indicated that the negotiations did not yield concrete results about the pilot zones.

In June, Israel and Lebanon reached a framework agreement that included Hezbollah's disarmament, a gradual Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, and the Lebanese army's deployment to two pilot zones. The Lebanese army commenced its deployment to the first zone on July 21 and has since strengthened its presence in the second zone.

The Lebanese side is eager to advance to new areas, while the Israeli side insists on verifying the implementation of the first two zones before moving forward. A US official noted that the two sides are closer to reaching a solution on advancing and expanding the pilot zone process. Lebanon has shortlisted countries to oversee the implementation, but an Israeli official emphasized that the expansion would only occur if the Israeli government sees positive outcomes.

The pilot zone initiative is the first trial of the framework agreement, but Hezbollah has consistently rejected direct talks and refuses to relinquish its weapons. Amidst the ongoing peace negotiations, the Israeli army conducted strikes in the south, claiming it was a response to the death of two soldiers in an explosion. Hezbollah's involvement in the conflict began in March when it launched rocket attacks on Israel in support of Iran.

In response, Israel carried out extensive air strikes and a ground invasion, which Lebanon reported caused over 4,300 casualties. Since the start of the fighting in Lebanon, Israel has lost 40 soldiers and one civilian contractor.
