Territorial Army’s contribution significant for govt’s 'Viksit Bharat' vision: Rajnath

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted the Territorial Army's significant role in advancing the government's vision of Viksit Bharat during a parliamentary consultative committee meeting on Thursday. While the primary role of defense forces is security-related, the Territorial Army contributes in other areas such as environmental conservation and social work.

Rajnath emphasized that the Territorial Army is a 'living embodiment of the Citizen-Soldier concept,' with members engaged in civilian pursuits while serving in uniform to safeguard borders and maintain internal security.

The minister emphasized that the Territorial Army creates surge capacity for the defence forces by providing a reserve of trained soldiers who can be deployed immediately whenever needed. Upon completing their tenure, these personnel return to civilian life, acting as a bridge between society and the military, inspiring the youth to join the defence forces.

The Territorial Army comprises approximately 44,400 personnel and 59 diverse units. It serves as first responders, providing immediate relief and support during natural calamities, as seen during the Kerala floods, Odisha Cyclone, and recent floods in Assam. The minister also praised the Territorial Army's efforts in environmental management and climate change mitigation, with ecological task forces planting 10 crore saplings, achieving an 80-85% survival rate.

Rajnath commended the Territorial Army's contributions to the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign in Jammu and Kashmir.
