Supreme Court ‘hopeful’ of amicable settlement in Sunjay Kapur estate row

The Supreme Court of India expressed optimism on Thursday, August 6, 2026, regarding a potential amicable resolution of the inheritance dispute between Sunjay Kapur's mother, Rani Kapur, and his wife, Priya Kapur. The court had appointed former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud as mediator after the parties agreed to attempt an amicable settlement following the conflict over Sunjay Kapur's sprawling estate linked to the Sona Group.

The mediator has held six sessions so far, interacting with all family members, and the court noted that the process is proceeding satisfactorily. The court also mentioned that the mediator has requested additional time until November 2 to continue the mediation proceedings. The court urged the parties to approach the mediation with an open mind and heart, avoiding prolonged litigation in light of the octogenarian Rani Kapur's involvement and health issues.

Sunjay Kapur, chairperson of Sona Comstar, passed away in 2023 after a cardiac arrest while playing polo in London. He was previously married to Nandita Mahtani and Karisma Kapoor, with whom he had two children, and later married Priya Sachdev Kapur in 2017, with whom he had a son, Azarias. The Rani Kapur Family Trust, which holds shares in Sona Comstar, was established through a trust deed in 2017 and is currently at the center of the legal dispute initiated by Rani Kapur, who has questioned the creation and operation of the trust, alleging that her control over substantial assets was effectively transferred without her informed consent.
