HYDRAA to deploy sewage treatment in restored lakes

The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) plans to introduce sewage treatment in the lakes they have restored, starting with a pilot project at Bam Rukn-ud-Dowlah Lake in Shivarampally. This low-cost, nature-based treatment technology was developed by BITS Pilani’s K.K. Birla Goa campus and will be executed by BITS Goa under HYDRAA's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

The agency aims to ensure only treated water enters the lakes as part of their lake rejuvenation efforts. HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath recently visited BITS Goa to study their Vertical Flow Constructed Wetland Technology and other sewage management systems, including Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) and Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technologies.

The Commissioner will continue observing the technology's performance at field installations to determine its effectiveness in real-world conditions. If successful, HYDRAA plans to gradually extend the sewage treatment system to other lakes being restored across the city.
