Strait of Hormuz deal imminent: Is US prepared to back bigger role for Iran? Explained

A proposed shipping arrangement between Iran and Oman for the Strait of Hormuz is close to finalisation, raising questions about the United States' willingness to accept a larger role in the strategically important waterway. Iran and Oman are reportedly nearing a temporary agreement, with officials from both countries indicating a deal could be announced soon.

The talks come amid progress reported on both sides toward an understanding over the key waterway. The proposed agreement would allow shipping through the Strait of Hormuz without any fees or tolls, covering all inbound and outbound traffic through Iranian territorial waters and a route closer to Oman. The United Nations’ International Maritime Organisation and the US would be involved in announcing the agreement, according to sources.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that an understanding in principle has been reached on most issues, including maritime routes, and the arrangement could remain valid for two to four months. However, Gharibabadi noted that the deal does not automatically mean the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The US has signaled readiness to return to commitments made in the interim understanding reached between Iran and the US in June, but denies direct involvement in the current discussions.

Iran insists the talks are between Tehran and Muscat, with no negotiations with the US taking place. The proposed deal remains under discussion, with details on implementation, duration, and maritime routes yet to be finalized.
