Sagnarigu MUSEC imposes curfew on Damankungyili, Nyeshie following deadly clash

The Sagnarigu Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) has enforced a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Damankungyili, Nyeshie and adjacent areas within the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern Region. This curfew was set to operate from 1700 hours to 0700 hours, pending further orders. The curfew was enacted following violent clashes that claimed one life and left six others injured in the affected communities.

This decision was made after an emergency meeting convened by the MUSEC on Tuesday, with the aim of assessing the security situation following the confrontations between the two communities. The meeting, chaired by Mr Abdulai Imoro Gong, the Municipal Chief Executive of Sagnarigu and Chairman of MUSEC, was recorded in a press statement signed by the same individual and forwarded to the Ghana News Agency in Tamale.

The statement underscored the Municipal Council's condemnation of the violence, describing the loss of life and injuries as unfortunate and unacceptable. The curfew was imposed in coordination with the Northern Regional Security Council, as a measure to restore calm, safeguard lives and property, and prevent further conflict escalation.

As part of the curfew regulations, the MUSEC announced a total prohibition on the possession of arms, ammunition, and other offensive weapons within the impacted communities. The Council also directed a heightened deployment of joint Police patrols to enforce the curfew and maintain order. They appealed to residents to strictly adhere to the directives and collaborate with the security forces to swiftly restore peace.

They urged chiefs, elders, youth, and all community members of Damankungyili and Nyeshie to remain composed and refrain from actions that might exacerbate tensions. The statement also extended an appeal to the public, especially media organizations, to report credible information regarding the disturbances to the Police, aiding ongoing investigations.

The Council further solicited restraint and professionalism in media reporting to prevent inflammatory commentary that could further inflame the security situation.
