Russian explosive drone nearly detonates Ukrainian ammunition plane in Germany

On Tuesday, a Ukrainian cargo plane was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany with an explosive-laden drone beside it, according to German media. The plane was carrying military ammunition, a detail that highlights the near-disaster scenario. European and Western officials suspect Russian agents may have been responsible, though German authorities have not officially attributed the blame.

The drone malfunctioned and failed to explode, likely due to a technical issue. Discovered near a parking area beside the airport's runway, the incident at the major freight hub forced the halting of takeoffs and landings, diverting several aircraft to nearby airports. A bomb-disposal robot was used to neutralize the device. A separate DHL cargo aircraft reportedly experienced an unidentified object strike it about 400 meters from the airport, possibly another drone, leading investigators to continue searching for debris.

This incident follows multiple drone incursions over European civilian airports and strategic installations, with intelligence officials believing Russian security agencies are likely behind such flights to disrupt transportation and deter support for Ukraine. Forensic experts concluded the explosive attached to the drone was powerful, similar to military-grade Semtex.

The Ukrainian aircraft was reportedly carrying ammunition that had arrived in Leipzig from France and was intended for onward transportation. The explosion of the drone's explosive device could have ignited the ammunition. German authorities are treating the incident as a terrorism investigation, emphasizing it as a hybrid attack due to the drone's professional modifications to evade defenses.

Leipzig/Halle Airport, a critical infrastructure supporting German and NATO military transportation, is designated as such by the German government. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described it as an escalation of danger. While no specific country or organization has been named, Bundestag member Roderich Kiesewetter directly accused Russia.
