North Korea fires ‘unidentified projectile’: South Korea

On Thursday, North Korea launched a short-range ballistic missile over the Sea of Japan, according to South Korea's military. The launch occurred after Pyongyang criticized Japan's growing military presence in the Pacific region. North Korea, which considers itself a "reversible" nuclear state since 2019, announced it would develop additional military options due to Japan's "transformation."

Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, stated that the regime would establish new military capabilities in response to Japan's actions. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff detected the missile, which was launched from the Wonsan area in North Korea, around 5pm. Both Seoul and Washington are currently analyzing the missile's specifications.

Japan's Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi has called for a significant increase in the country's military capabilities, citing a recent Japanese government assessment highlighting growing regional threats. Tokyo's defense ministry confirmed the launch, stating that no impact was observed on Japanese territories. Seoul has intensified surveillance and readiness for potential further missile launches, sharing information with the United States and Japan.

The South Korean and US militaries plan to conduct their annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, aimed at countering the nuclear-armed North. North Korea has traditionally been outraged by such joint drills, viewing them as rehearsals for invasion. In recent years, North Korea has strengthened its economic and military ties with Russia, providing troops and munitions to Russia's war in Ukraine.

Some experts believe the recent North Korean missile launch may have been intended to test weapons systems before Kim Jong-un's expected visit to Russia this year. If the trip occurs, Kim is likely to showcase the missile systems to Russia or seek to export them. Japan has raised its military expenditure by 9.7%, bringing its defense budget to $62.2 billion in 2025, which is equivalent to 1.4% of its GDP.

China, a close ally of North Korea, has expressed concern over Japan's rising militarism. Despite South Korea's dovish President Lee Jae Myung's recent offers for talks with nuclear-armed Pyongyang without preconditions, the hermetic regime has yet to respond to these proposals. The two Koreas remain technically at war, as their 1950-53 conflict ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty.
