MTN Ghana Heroes of Change Season 8 launched with GH¢400,000 top prize

Ghana's telecommunications giant, MTN, officially launched Season 8 of its charitable initiative, Heroes of Change, at its headquarters in Accra. The charity program, which is among the most respected humanitarian platforms in the country, aims to recognize individuals who have dedicated their lives to serving others and making a difference in their communities.

Happening during MTN's 30th anniversary celebrations, the launch serves to emphasize the importance of acknowledging Ghanaians who selflessly work to uplift their fellow citizens. The ceremony was attended by key members of MTN's management and previous winners of the esteemed awards. Since its initiation in July 2013, Heroes of Change has honored and celebrated ordinary Ghanaians who have achieved extraordinary feats within their communities.

At the event, past award winners presented MTN with a large citation as a token of appreciation for their support during challenging times when no one else stepped forward. Speaking at the launch, MTN's Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Madam Adwoa Wiafe, highlighted how the program embodies the company's belief that meaningful progress is initiated by those who make a conscious decision to make a difference.

She spoke about the current winner, Dr Angela Dwamena-Aboagye of the Ark Foundation, and the other finalists, emphasizing the selfless nature of their commitment to aiding others. Madam Wiafe explained that Heroes of Change is in line with MTN's 30th anniversary theme, '30 Years of Progress, Powered by You,' and the company's Sustainability Month theme, 'Together for a Sustainable Future: Small Actions, Big Impact.'

Beyond connectivity, MTN believes that every Ghanaian deserves to be treated with dignity and seen for their true potential. Since its inception, more than 100 heroes have been recognized through the program, and the MTN Ghana Foundation has implemented more than 178 major projects that have positively impacted about 5 million lives.

The competition has now been boosted with a new prize structure. As the overall winner, an individual will now receive GH¢400,000, a significant increase from the previous GH¢200,000. The first runner-up will receive GH¢200,000, and each finalist will be granted GH¢100,000. In addition, new special awards for sustainability and digital innovation, along with recognition for nominators, have been introduced.

These awards are not payments for past contributions, but rather investments in the future impact these heroes will continue to make in their communities. Madam Wiafe called upon Ghanaians to nominate local heroes who may not seek recognition for their selfless actions, such as teachers, healers, mentors, and those who are transforming lives. "It is my pleasure to officially declare MTN Heroes of Change Season 8 launched," she concluded.
