Matthias Jaissle's Newcastle in-tray: Guimaraes exit, Toney time and Liverpool test

Matthias Jaissle has been appointed as the new manager of Newcastle United, replacing Eddie Howe after a four-and-a-half-year stint. The German coach, 38, has agreed to a four-year contract and will take over from the club with a £9.5 million compensation payment to their Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli. Jaissle's first game in charge will be a pre-season friendly against Valencia on August 22.

The Magpies parted ways with Howe last week following their first domestic trophy in 70 years and two consecutive Champions League appearances under Jaissle's predecessor. The club's new ownership has tasked Jaissle with building on Howe's success while also aiming to improve upon last season's 12th-place finish in the Premier League.

The appointment of Jaissle comes amidst a significant change in transfer policy, with the club bringing in young talent like goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, midfielder Aladji Bamba, and winger Bazoumana Toure, all aged between 18 and 24. Jaissle will need to work with these inexperienced players to help them adapt to the Premier League, alongside potentially bringing back former Al Ahli striker Ivan Toney, now 30, who scored 72 goals in 93 matches during his time at Newcastle.

The first competitive match for Jaissle will be against Liverpool on August 23, a game that holds emotional significance for both clubs, as it marks the return of former Newcastle striker Bruno Guimaraes and the first match under Jaissle's management.
