Man, 75, extradited from Australia remanded in custody

A man, aged 75, has been extradited from Australia and remanded in custody after being accused of historic sexual offences against relatives in Belfast. The individual appeared at Magistrates Court to face charges of indecent assault and gross indecency with a child. For the sake of the complainants' privacy, the accused's name has not been disclosed.

The alleged crimes took place between January 1969 and March 1983. The accused was first arrested in Victoria in 2023 and returned to Northern Ireland on Wednesday after being extradited. PSNI, Home Office officials, and Australian authorities collaborated to locate and apprehend him. He was sought for trial on 17 charges, including 14 cases of indecent assault and three counts of gross indecency with a child.

In a remote hearing from Musgrave Police Station, the man did not speak during the court proceedings. Attorney Jonathan Browne, representing the accused, did not raise objections regarding the execution of the international arrest warrant. The attorney also stated that the client is not seeking bail at this time. District Judge Anne Marshall ordered the accused to remain in custody until August 20, when a preliminary enquiry date will be set.
