Korean War participating countries call for stronger solidarity in Washington forum

Officials from South Korea, the United States and other nations that took part in the Korean War of 1950-53 gathered in Washington on Thursday for a forum emphasizing the importance of solidarity among them. Held by South Korea's Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs at the U.S. capital, it marked the first time the annual conference took place outside of South Korea. Representatives from France, Turkey, the Philippines and Thailand were among the 200 attendees.

Vice Veterans Minister Kang Yun-jin led the opening remarks, expressing profound gratitude to the 22 nations that contributed combat troops, medical aid or other support during the conflict. She emphasized the need to honor and remember the veterans' sacrifice, dedication and courage. She highlighted the significance of choosing Washington, D.C. as the first overseas venue for the conference, noting that the U.S. marked its 250th anniversary during the event, with freedom being a defining value of the nation.

Jennifer Walsh, principal deputy director of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, spoke about the agency's commitment to recovering U.S. service members unaccounted for from the Korean War, including an estimated 7,000 from the conflict. She stressed the hope and motivation this offers to families and all involved in the search.

The diplomats of the participating nations delivered video messages, underscoring the sacrifices made by Korean War veterans that laid the foundation for freedom and peace. The forum also served as a reminder of the enduring friendship and cooperation among nations forged through shared challenges and common values.
