GNAT urges calm over BECE results, asks dissatisfied candidates to petition WAEC

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has urged parents, candidates and other education stakeholders to maintain composure following the release of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results. Any concerns should be addressed through formal petitions to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) rather than through public speculation or unverified claims.

GNAT appealed to WAEC to provide a detailed explanation of the processes it utilized in determining the examination results in order to boost public trust and comprehension. The teacher union emphasized the importance of not placing undue stress on candidates, warning that portraying exams as a life-or-death situation could have severe emotional and psychological effects on children.

They cautioned against overreacting when examination results are released, stating that children often mirror the emotions displayed by adults. GNAT's General Secretary, Thomas Tanko Musah, made these remarks in an interview with TV3, urging dissatisfied candidates and parents to submit their grievances directly to WAEC instead of resorting to public accusations.

He also noted that in certain instances, adults may exhibit more anxiety and aggression than the students themselves, and cautioned that such reactions could adversely affect the emotional well-being of children.
