Gen Z Helicopter Parents Are So Intense That They’re Calling Hiring Managers to Interfere

Many Gen Z job applicants are now facing the uncomfortable reality of their helicopter parents interfering with their professional lives, according to a recent Wall Street Journal report. These overbearing parents are often speaking directly with hiring managers, shadowing their children’s Zoom calls, or even applying for jobs on their behalf, leaving employers bewildered.

Steven Clark, CEO of an Alaska-based staffing firm, has encountered this issue multiple times, with at least one instance of a parent calling him to complain about his fired employee. Such behavior has become so common that it was discussed at the world’s largest human resources conference, with over half of the attendees admitting to having a parent contact them on behalf of a young employee or job candidate.

Lynne Alba, a talent acquisition director, warned that parents should refrain from contacting employers about their child's job status or questions, stating, "Parents should not be calling employers to check on their application status or ask questions on behalf of their child."
