Ford Unveils New, Affordable Electric Truck, the Fathom

Ford's first midsize electric truck, called the Fathom, has been given an official name but still lacks a proper design reveal. Launched last year with its Universal EV Platform, the Fathom is set to be priced starting at $28,350 (or $29,945 after destination). The Fathom aims to compete with vehicles like Slate's upcoming EV pickup.

Its name, "Fathom," reflects Ford's aim to explore innovative possibilities in vehicle design. Ford emphasizes the inclusion of standard features in the Fathom, such as a high-resolution touchscreen, BlueCruise for hands-free highway driving, digital keys, and embedded Apple Maps. It also highlights the Fathom's bi-directional power capability, suggesting potential uses like charging tools, small appliances, or even a home in an emergency.

Compared to competitors, the Fathom promises more passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4 while offering ample cargo space between its bed and frunk. Although a clear image of the Fathom is yet to be released on Ford's website or teaser video, early spy shots suggest a vehicle that sits between the Ranger and Maverick in size but with edgier, more futuristic styling.

With Ford's recent shift away from the F-150 Lightning, the Fathom represents a significant move for the company as it continues its transition to EVs. Currently, Ford's electric offerings consist of the Mustang Mach-E and the E-Transit, leaving a gap in the market for affordable electric trucks that could be filled by the Fathom.

Pre-orders for the Fathom are anticipated to commence in early 2027, with official deliveries expected later in the year.
