Ford finally pulls off the sub-$30K electric truck it promised years ago

Ford has finally delivered on its promise of a sub-$30,000 electric truck, unveiling the Ford Fathom. The Fathom not only meets but exceeds expectations by starting at $28,350, with a $1,595 destination fee pushing the price to $29,945. This makes the Fathom a more affordable option compared to the upcoming Slate Truck, which starts at $26,400 but offers a shorter range and fewer features.

The Fathom comes equipped with a standard-range battery, providing up to 300 miles of range, bidirectional charging, and a digital key as standard features. It also carries the hardware for Ford's hands-free highway driving system, BlueCruise. The Fathom is the first vehicle to be built on Ford's new Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, designed to offer lower price points without compromising on usability.

The platform features a large single-piece aluminum casting for collision repair cost savings and utilizes the battery pack as the vehicle's floor. Inside, the Fathom offers Apple Maps integration, CarPlay, and Android Auto support. Ford's new platform also promises more passenger space than a Toyota RAV4, as well as both a front trunk and a traditional bed for cargo flexibility.

While the Fathom's production promises and pricing are promising, the automaker's past performance leaves room for caution until the promised timeline is met without technical or logistical issues. Additionally, EVgo will start installing hundreds of Tesla V4 Superchargers across major US cities, marking a significant expansion for Tesla's charging network.
