Ex-Badgers star Jonathan Taylor second-highest-paid NFL running back

Former University of Wisconsin star and NFL running back Jonathan Taylor has inked a two-year, $44 million contract extension with the Indianapolis Colts, reports indicate. This extension secures his future with the Colts through 2028, avoiding a potential free agency in 2026. The deal positions Taylor as the NFL's second-highest-paid running back, earning $22 million annually, slightly less than Atlanta Falcons' Bijan Robinson's $22.5 million per year contract.

Atlanta and Robinson sealed their agreement earlier this week, concluding a three-year pact potentially worth up to $75 million. Taylor, a three-year notable player with the Badgers, is just behind the Colts' franchise rushing record, which stands at 9,226 yards set by Edgerrin James. With 7,598 career rushing yards, Taylor trails only James to claim that milestone.

The Colts' star has earned three Pro Bowl selections, the most recent in the last two seasons. Prior to the 2023 season, Taylor engaged in a contract extension dispute, potentially facing a trade before the start of the campaign. However, the Indianapolis Colts and Taylor ultimately reached an agreement. Taylor's significance in the debate over running back value has been evident, with players like Robinson and himself revitalizing the position's perceived value.

During his junior season at Wisconsin, Taylor amassed more rushing yards than any player in NCAA history – 6,174 yards in 926 attempts, averaging 6.7 yards per rush, and scoring 50 touchdowns. He was twice named All-American and topped the Heisman Trophy ballot all three years, earning two Doak Walker Awards for the nation's best running back.
