Call for Umno to admit TH shortcomings will likely be ignored, says analyst

Analyst Syaza Shukri of International Islamic University Malaysia predicts that Umno will most likely dismiss Khairy Jamaluddin's plea for the party to acknowledge its shortcomings in managing Tabung Haji (TH). She believes Khairy's suggestion will be viewed as his personal opinion, not necessarily a consensus among the party's grassroots members.

Syaza proposes that Umno could respond by honestly addressing the governance failures that plagued TH, but warns that they might instead argue they were not the sole party responsible, or suggest the issues only occurred between 2014 and 2017.

The royal commission of inquiry (RCI) report on TH's management and operations from 2014 to 2020 has recently been declassified and released. The RCI revealed that TH had hidden its true financial state for years, reporting a RM3.4 billion profit in 2017 when it should have recognized a RM1.4 billion net loss. The report also highlighted that TH's finances were significantly underreported, resulting in almost RM4.8 billion shortfall.

Khairy Jamaluddin's call for Umno to accept its failures in managing TH is more than just a criticism, according to Ahmad Zaharuddin Sani Ahmad Sabri of Global Asia Consulting. Zaharuddin believes it is an implicit admission that the political culture within Malaysia's economic institutions has been a liability for the country. He also questions why billion-ringgit financial institutions and government-linked companies (GLCs) continue to be used as platforms for appointing political figures, despite the public ultimately bearing the risks.

Zaharuddin suggests that this issue is no longer solely an Umno problem, but a bipartisan issue that has persisted over the past few decades.
