Thai FM says Chinese envoy should explain Suvarnabhumi row, not inflame tensions

BANGKOK — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow addressed the controversy surrounding Chinese tourists at Suvarnabhumi Airport on Wednesday, urging the Chinese ambassador to Thailand to provide clarification without exacerbating tensions. In an interview at Government House on August 5th, Sihasak highlighted the highly sensitive nature of such incidents, emphasizing the need for careful diplomatic handling.

Sihasak proposed that the ambassador should take action to bridge understanding between the nations rather than solely defending China's interests. He pointed out that the ambassador's role primarily involves fostering mutual relations between Thailand and China, as well as promoting mutual understanding among the peoples of both countries.

The controversy erupted after approximately twenty Chinese passengers were denied boarding at Suvarnabhumi Airport, with a video circulating of a Thai airport security officer making a racist gesture. Sihasak stressed that diplomats must exercise caution in their public statements when dealing with disputes, urging the ambassador to avoid actions that could escalate tensions.

He also noted that the same principle should apply to Thai diplomats stationed abroad, emphasizing that Thailand’s ambassador in China must work towards preserving strong bilateral relations. Sihasak reiterated the importance of Thailand adhering to its immigration regulations while simultaneously ensuring visitors experience a positive atmosphere.

He stressed that authorities should strike a balance between enforcing the law and upholding Thailand’s reputation as a welcoming destination.
