Taiwan launches annual war games as pressure from China grows

Taiwan commenced a significant military exercise on August 5, 2024, to evaluate commanders' adaptability in combat situations when enemy actions do not align with expectations. The 10-day Han Kuang drill initiated early in the morning following an order from an underground command center in Taipei, triggering readiness measures such as fighter jet dispersals and naval deployments.

This exercise marks a first for Taiwan, incorporating a "backbrief" approach, where junior officers restate mission details to commanders, enhancing coordination. The drill also focuses on potential Chinese attempts to disrupt command centers, ports, logistics, and defense industry sites, a critical concern given China's historical stance on Taiwan's sovereignty.

For the first time, the drill will deliberately slow internet speeds to assess civilians' communication capabilities in adverse conditions, simulating the relocation of a major arsenal, mobilization of civilian factories, and escort drills off Taiwan's Pacific coast. These exercises aim to make the drills more realistic, following criticisms of past exercises being overly staged.

Over 20,000 reservists will participate, and an "embedded reporter" mechanism will monitor frontline news releases to counter enemy disinformation. The drill underscores Taiwan's commitment to enhancing its readiness and population preparedness for potential conflicts.
