Swimmer le Clos says his home was destroyed in a fire while he was at the Commonwealth Games

Olympic champion swimmer Chad le Clos has revealed that his South African home was destroyed in a fire on the day he broke the all-time Commonwealth Games record with a bronze medal in the men’s 4x100-meter medley relay at the Glasgow games. The 34-year-old South African, who has won a record 21st Commonwealth Games medal, posted on his Instagram account that his apartment in Cape Town was among several units in the block to be gutted by the blaze on July 30, while he was away competing.

Le Clos expressed his condolences to the elderly neighbor who died in the fire, who had been a friend for many years. In the aftermath of the tragedy, le Clos announced that his foundation would raise funds to help other affected neighbors rebuild their homes. Le Clos, who claimed Olympic gold in the 200-meter butterfly at the 2012 London Olympics, has won four Olympic medals and 16 world titles throughout his career. He had planned to compete at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
