SunCharge Motors builds electric autos with solar panels on the roof

SunCharge Motors, a startup established in 2024 by Sanskar Modi, has introduced electric three-wheelers equipped with solar panels on their roofs in Pune. This innovative solution addresses the persistent challenge of charging infrastructure and inconsistent power supply faced by commercial three-wheeler operators who are hesitant to switch to electric vehicles due to higher running costs compared to compressed natural gas and diesel alternatives.

The company's unique approach involves integrating solar panels directly onto the vehicle, allowing it to generate a portion of its energy requirements while in operation. This energy-integrated system aims to optimize the balance between solar input, battery power, and load during a working day. SunCharge Motors claims to have completed design and moved from sketch to delivery within a span of two years, with the first prototypes achieving approximately 180 km of range within a 25% efficient solar roof.

Unlike conventional electric vehicles, SunCharge Motors' three-wheelers offer a more favorable energy equation due to their lighter weight, slower speed, and significantly lower energy consumption per kilometre. The company frames its work around energy rather than vehicle features, emphasizing uptime and reduced running costs for fleet operators. The vehicles are available in various color options and are marketed based on their ability to maximize operational hours rather than emphasizing range specifications.

The company has also introduced a connected driver app to complement the first deliveries, further enhancing the user experience and operational efficiency. SunCharge Motors' approach to addressing the energy challenge in the electric vehicle landscape stands out in a market primarily focused on price and range competition, highlighting the company's commitment to innovative, sustainable mobility solutions.
