Russian strike on Rozetka's Brovary warehouse causes billions in damage, co-owner says

Director Vladimir Tkachuk of the Uraldronzavod factory, which builds drones for the Russian military, was severely injured when his car exploded, according to reports on Wednesday. This marks the second attack in a week targeting Russian drone manufacturers. The explosion occurred late Tuesday in Bolshoy Istok, a town near Yekaterinburg, located approximately 870 miles east of Moscow.

The driver of the vehicle was killed in the blast, and Tkachuk is currently hospitalized in critical condition. Images shared on Russian social media purportedly show the charred remains of Tkachuk's Mercedes, along with debris surrounding the vehicle.

Tass and RIA Novosti agencies, Russian news agencies, have not provided further details about the explosion or the potential suspects. No official statement has been issued by the authorities at this time. Tkachuk, a small business owner, established the Upyr drone production facility near Yekaterinburg, a major industrial center in Russia's Ural Mountains.

The Upyr drone, a low-cost and simple first-person view model, has been praised by troops for its ability to resist jamming. Tkachuk, who founded the company in 2023, has been seen demonstrating his drones to President Vladimir Putin.

This latest attack follows another incident last week, where the director and founder of a different Russian drone manufacturer was wounded in a shooting, described by prosecutors as an "attempted murder." Ukraine has not commented on this recent incident, which occurred one day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted a video claiming to show a civilian being chased and attacked by a Russian drone in the city of Kherson.

In his social media post, Zelenskyy urged the world to view the footage, alleging that Russian soldiers derive pleasure from killing and abusing civilians. Moscow attributes numerous bombings and other attacks against high-ranking military officials to Kyiv since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Moscow has also blamed Kyiv for a recent deadly bombing at a luxury Moscow restaurant, which it claims was an attempt to intimidate the Italian community in Russia, killing five and injuring 19 people.

The Russian Foreign Ministry circulated an embassy statement without attributing responsibility or naming the suspected perpetrators. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin called the bombing a "brutal terrorist act," but did not disclose the identity of the attackers. Several Russian media outlets have alleged that the attack targeted Russian General Alexander Chaiko, who commanded troops during a failed seizure of the Ukrainian capital in 2022 and recently assumed the role of chief of Russia's aerospace forces. These claims remain unverified.
