Russian attacks kill one in Ukrainian capital Kyiv, trigger fires

Russian forces launched a barrage of ballistic missiles at the Ukrainian capital Kyiv early Wednesday, resulting in the death of one person and injuring 22 others. The assault targeted seven sites within the city, which is home to a population of three million inhabitants. The attack commenced after midnight and prompted the activation of air raid alerts for an extended duration.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko, through a Telegram post, reported that a warehouse building near the city center was destroyed, and rescue teams had successfully retrieved two individuals from the debris. An ambulance driver was among the wounded. Klitschko also mentioned that fires had erupted in warehouses and storage areas due to the attack, although an earlier claim that a 20-story apartment building was ablaze was later found to be false.

A substantial fire erupted on the outskirts of the city, and remnants of a dislodged missile landed in proximity to a residential building. The city's military administration disclosed that the assault triggered an ammonia leak, which is currently being managed by emergency responders. Witnesses to the attack reported explosions happening across the city, and Mayor Klitschko affirmed that air defense units were mobilized to counter the assault.

In the surrounding Kyiv region, another fatality was reported, alongside 21 other individuals who sustained injuries. The veracity of these accounts could not be independently substantiated by Reuters. Both Russia and Ukraine have denied targeting civilians during the ongoing conflict, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
