Pro-Israel candidate Wesley Bell defeats Cori Bush in Missouri Democratic primary

In Missouri's Democratic primary, Rep. Wesley Bell secured victory over former House representative Cori Bush for the state's 1st Congressional District. Bush had gained recognition as a fierce critic of Israel following the October 7 Hamas attack and the ongoing war in Gaza, whereas Bell pursued a more moderate stance and consistently backed the US-Israel strategic alliance.

This result marks a significant triumph for the Democratic Party's pro-Israel faction, thanks to substantial financial support from AIPAC and its allies.

During his victory speech, Bell addressed his supporters, stating, "There's folks who chose to have their voices heard when there are forces trying to take those voices away from them. But you chose to show up, show out and let - not just the country - but the world know that we are here and we are not going away." As the race progresses to the general election in November, Bell declared, "The fight is just starting," and promised to "work with anyone who will work with us."

Bell emphasized the immense work ahead, saying, "We do have a lot of work to do. And the only way we do that is if we come together." Meanwhile, Bush expressed disappointment to her supporters, saying, "It pisses me off that for the next two years, this community will be represented by someone who didn't deem you valuable enough to show up to one candidate forum where there were audience comments, even though I showed up to every one."

The outcome of this election, viewed as a crucial test of Israel's standing within the Democratic Party, indicates that pro-Israel Democrats have, for now, successfully thwarted the progressive challenge on Israel.
