‘Nobody Wanted to Give A Former Principal Money’: How An Educator Built An Edtech AI Startup With $63M From VCs

In November 2022, Adeel Khan, a former educator, took a break from his teaching career to explore the emerging field of artificial intelligence (AI). Khan had previously served as an assistant principal and founded a public high school in Denver. After witnessing the educational potential of generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Khan decided to develop a platform specifically tailored for K-12 teachers and students.

MagicSchool AI, which Khan founded, serves as an all-in-one AI operating system for K-12 educators and students. The platform offers a range of features such as creating rubrics, differentiating assignments, generating practice worksheets, and providing tailored feedback for students. MagicSchool AI positions itself as a "vertical AI solution for K-12 schools," catering to the unique needs of the education sector rather than the general tech market.

Despite the platform's rapid adoption, securing funding for MagicSchool AI was a difficult journey for Khan. He initially worked with hourly contractors and lacked a formal business model. However, once the user base approached 1 million, Khan started pitching venture capitalists. But his background as an educator proved to be a hurdle, as potential investors often dismissed his application due to his lack of a typical tech resume.

Many investors were accustomed to backing companies led by individuals with backgrounds in tech giants like Google or Stanford University.

MagicSchool AI's growth metrics, however, helped Khan secure funding. The company raised a $2.4 million seed round led by Colorado-based Range Ventures, followed by additional funding from Bain Capital Ventures, Valor Equity Partners, Smash Capital, and GSV Ventures. Today, MagicSchool AI has raised nearly $63 million in total funding, with a significant portion of its customers being large school districts and private institutions. As of now, roughly 8 million educators worldwide have signed up for the platform.

Khan's unique background in education has become a key asset for MagicSchool AI, challenging the notion that technical expertise is the only path to success in the AI industry. Khan believes that the next wave of innovation in AI will come from domain experts who can leverage technology to address specific industry challenges.
