Nigeria needs urgent intervention to avert disaster – Donald Duke

Former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, has called for urgent intervention to prevent Nigeria's imminent disaster. In an interview on Arise News, the Peoples Redemption Party presidential candidate highlighted the country's slow economic growth, failed security architecture, and poor governance as the primary concerns. Duke warned that if current trends continue, Nigeria could face further crisis in the next four years.

He noted that the economy is broken, with interest rates reaching the upper 30s, and governance has been poor over the past two decades, characterized by politics rather than actual governance.

Duke pointed out the recent scandal involving the alleged establishment of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, which he sees as a clear example of poor governance. He emphasized that the symptoms of inadequacy in Nigeria include Boko Haram, ISWAP, banditry, and kidnapping, all of which are the result of a lack of economic growth and effective governance.

Duke expressed his decision to run for the presidency due to the urgency of the situation, stressing that while spectators can analyze the country's condition, those who aspire to leadership must get involved and lead the nation towards a better future.

He also lamented the proliferation of political parties in Nigeria, advocating for unity among them to chart a new course for the country. Duke urged opposition parties to come together, contrasting the stability of Western democracies with Nigeria's fragmented opposition. He called for competent and effective individuals to join his team, emphasizing that politics and governance are two different things.

Duke's political record as a former governor reflects his intention to leave Nigeria better than he found it, and he urged future appointees to prioritize the country's well-being over short-term political gains.
