Marine Corps conducting probe into firearms, ammunition system following gun incident

The Marine Corps is currently investigating the firearms and ammunition management systems at an amphibious unit located on the southeastern coast of South Korea following a fatal gun incident that occurred on Monday. The incident resulted in the death of a noncommissioned officer from the 1st Marine Division, whose body was discovered at an off-base housing unit in Pohang, approximately 270 kilometers southeast of Seoul, with a gunshot wound.

According to the Marine Corps, there were no indications of forced entry or a struggle at the scene, suggesting that the death was caused by a gunshot wound with no signs of foul play.

The Marine Corps has stated that they are collaborating with relevant law enforcement agencies to investigate how the deceased marine was able to remove the weapon from the base. They are reviewing surveillance footage and access logs to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Marine Corps has emphasized that they take this matter very seriously and will conduct a thorough review of the firearms and ammunition control systems, as well as the unit management, to prevent any recurrence of such incidents in the future.
