Kerala to set up an independent AYUSH University

The government of Kerala has announced plans to establish an independent university dedicated to Ayurveda, Yoga and Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH) systems of medicine. Health Minister K. Muraleedharan revealed on August 4, 2026, that a four-member committee has been formed to draft the legislation for this new institution.

The committee will be chaired by the Principal Secretary of the AYUSH department, with the State mission director of the National AYUSH Mission serving as convener. Other members include the director of Ayurveda medical education and the principal of the Government Homoeopathic Medical College.

According to Mr. Muraleedharan, this initiative marks a significant step forward for the AYUSH sector in the state. The proposed university will consolidate all AYUSH educational institutions currently under the Kerala University of Health Sciences, fostering stronger collaboration in education, research, and clinical services across these systems of medicine. The university will be located at the School of Fundamental Research in Ayurveda in Tripunithura.

The committee's task will involve reviewing the current functioning of existing AYUSH educational institutions, evaluating the proposed university's structure, infrastructure, research projects, and administrative framework. The draft legislation for the university is set to be submitted within two months. The government's objective is to elevate the academic standards of AYUSH systems, expand research opportunities, and develop programs that meet international benchmarks.

Muraleedharan emphasized that an independent AYUSH University will enhance education, research, clinical studies, and drug development in these traditional systems of medicine, potentially boosting their acceptance nationwide and internationally.
