JP Nadda visits Nagaland’s landslide-hit Mon, assures Centre’s support

On Wednesday, Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda journeyed to Mon town in Nagaland, a region devastated by landslides on July 19, and pledged the central government's support for the victims. The town experienced multiple landslides and flash floods due to heavy rainfall, resulting in the loss of 11 lives. Over 800 houses were entirely destroyed, while 1,079 suffered partial damage, compelling residents to evacuate.

Accompanied by Assam's Medical Minister Ashok Singhal and Nagaland MP S Phangnon Konyak, Nadda engaged with affected families, expressing his solidarity and promising the Union government's full support for relief, rehabilitation, and restoration efforts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had tasked Nadda with personally visiting the district to evaluate the situation and convey PM's condolences.

Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak informed the visiting team that roads, bridges, and public infrastructure had sustained significant damage. Relief camps and temporary shelters were established, and food, water, medicines, and essential supplies were being distributed. The education sector bore losses with seven schools and 15 hostels severely damaged, leaving 1,300 students without their study materials and uniforms.

Mon district received a total of 341mm of rainfall between July 19 and 31, leading to the tragic loss of 11 lives. Despite a week-long search, the bodies of a student and a mother buried in the landslide remained undiscovered. The local community held traditional last rites for the recovered victims, and the search was subsequently called off.
