Affiliate links on Android Authority may earn us a commission. Google is moving forward with the Pixel Tag, a Bluetooth tracker that will be compatible with the Google Find Hub network. This Bluetooth tracker could provide an Android alternative to the AirTag, but there are several factors that could hinder its success.

While Apple, Samsung, and Motorola already offer Bluetooth trackers for their respective devices, Google has been slower to expand its Pixel hardware lineup. The Pixel Tag might fill the gap in the Pixel portfolio, but it will face stiff competition from established players and third-party brands.

The AirTag, introduced by Apple in 2021, has gained popularity due to its integration with Apple's extensive Find My network and its inclusion of ultra-wideband (UWB) technology. Google's Pixel Tag, however, is five years late to the market and lacks the network reach of Apple's Find My.

In addition, Google's Find Hub network isn't as extensive as Apple's Find My network. The top smartphone brands have also released updated versions of their trackers, such as the AirTag 2, Motorola Moto Tag 2, and Samsung SmartTag 2. This further complicates Google's chances of competing in the Bluetooth tracker market.

As a current AirTag user frustrated with the ecosystem-locked device, I am not inclined to purchase another Bluetooth tracker. The Pixel Tag may not be for me unless Google makes the Find Hub network cross-platform. While the Pixel Tag could be a great addition to the Pixel ecosystem, it will need to break the mold and offer cross-platform compatibility, rechargeable batteries, and a truly integrated experience across various devices.
